The Shangri-Las

The Shangri-Las were an American pop girl group formed in 1963 in New York City. They gained popularity between 1964 and 1966 with their teen melodramas, and are best known for hits such as "Leader of the Pack", "Remember (Walking in the Sand)", and "Give Him a Great Big Kiss".

Originally formed at Andrew Jackson High School in Queens, New York City, The Shangri-Las consisted of two sets of sisters: Mary Weiss (lead singer) and Elizabeth "Betty" Weiss, as well as identical twins Marguerite "Marge"/"Margie" Ganser and Mary Ann Ganser. They started performing at school shows, talent shows, and teen hops before catching the attention of Artie Ripp, who helped them secure their first record deal with Kama Sutra.

Mary Weiss was the main lead singer of the group, while Betty took lead on some songs like "Maybe", "Shout", and more. Mary Ann Ganser also had her moments leading most of "I'm Blue". Their music often featured covers or B-sides from other artists like *The Ikettes*. The Shangri-Las disbanded in 1968 but left a lasting impact on pop music.
