Thomas Brinkmann

Cologne-based Thomas Brinkmann is a German producer of minimal music. Renowned for his audio works that hover amongst forms such as techno, dub or ambient, Brinkmann has made a significant impact on the music scene. Influenced by bands like Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Tempel, and Kraftwerk, he also drew inspiration from funk, soul, and rare grooves. In addition to his musical talents, Brinkmann is a skilled drummer who learned from Can's Jaki Liebezeit. He began experimenting with converting records into manually programmable sequencers in 1978.

After working in design during the late 1980s, Brinkmann lived in France and Italy before returning to Germany to study at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. However, he was expelled from the academy in 1996 after a legal dispute. It was in 1997 that Brinkmann gained attention in the techno scene with his innovative use of a modified record player with a dual tonearm.
