Founded in 1978 by [a=Daniel Miller], Mute (also known as [l36339]) releases various forms of music, with an emphasis on electronic and experimental pop. In May 2002 the label was acquired by the [l=EMI Group]. In 2010 Miller did an agreement with EMI to handle Mute as an independent label again, licensing the trademark from EMI via his company [l=Mute Artists Ltd.], but EMI kept the rights over Mute's back catalogue. After the EMI Group was dissolved, in 2012 [l206061] acquired [l636]'s back catalogue.

Branch offices exist in Germany ([l168349]) and in North America ([l36296]). 

Mute has spawned many regional and special-interest sublabels, some of which are still active. One offshoot, [l=Parallel Series], even became independent of [l636] Mute also operates Mute Bank Mail Order, which sells the label's merchandise directly to consumers. Mute Bank published two issues of [i]Mute Statement[/i], a softcover book that details the entire discography of the label and includes band profiles and photos of release artwork.

Another label strongly associated with Mute is [l=Toast Hawaii], run by [a=Depeche Mode]'s [a=Andrew Fletcher].

Throbbing Gristle is an industrial group that emerged from the avant-garde performance art collective COUM Transmissions. They started performing in 1976 and concluded their journey with a memorable show in San Francisco in 1981, which was later released as "Mission Of Dead Souls". After officially forming on September 3, 1975, Throbbing Gristle disbanded on June 23, 1981. Following the split, Genesis and Peter formed Psychic TV (with Peter eventually joining Coil), while Chris and Cosey continued as Chris & Cosey. In 2004, they reunited after a hiatus of 23 years to plan a weekend festival that ultimately didn't happen. Instead, they recorded a limited TGNOW album in London. Since then, they have released new material and remasters along with live performances.

In 2010, Genesis decided to withdraw from touring with Throbbing Gristle, prompting the remaining three members to rename themselves X-TG. Sadly, Peter's passing in November of that year marked the end of TG/XTG for good. However, one final release under the name X-TG came out in 2012.

Note: Throbbing Gristle operated as an organization where all releases had to be approved collectively rather than individually by its members. Most official releases were issued by Industrial Records, Fetish Records, and Mute (with some exceptions).

TG Now, originally released in 2004, was the sound of Throbbing Gristle testing the waters, seeing how it felt to work together again. The 4-track limited vinyl and CD release was available originally to attendees of the RE-TG Astoria event in 2004, their first performance together since 1981’s US tour.

With Part Two: The Endless Not, the band returned to the studio after deciding they had unfinished creative business outside of the live arena. Released in 2007, over 25 years after their last studio album, the album was, as Tiny Mix Tapes put it, “…more of a rebirthing than a reunion”. Several live documents followed the album’s release, but the untimely death of Peter Christopherson in November 2010 meant that this would become the final Throbbing Gristle album, and 15 years since the reformation, all the albums included in this phase of the remastered reissues, Part Two: The Endless Not, TG Now and A Souvenir of Camber Sands, stand proudly within the influential catalogue and legacy of TG.
