This is the third in a noble series: the first was Morgan Fisher's now legendary 1980 classic, then in 2000 his expanded volume two; now - another twenty years on - Volume three, an even further extended homage to Morgan's minimal but cornucopian concept, which was simplicity itself: invite a selected body of artists to make a one minute composition and then group them together in through-listening blocks. This, the 40th anniversary edition, features 124 contributors - some well-thumbed (The Residents, Fred Frith, Stewart Lee, Billy Bragg, David Thomas, John Otway, Steve Moore, Peter Blegvad, Henry Kaiser, Atilla the Stockbroker, Terry Riley, Half Japanese, Tom Robinson, Bob Drake, Alternative TV, The Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain, &c., and many others lesser known or as well known but in other musical circles - including members of Van der Graaf Generator, Curved Air, Zoviet France, Stomu Yamashta's Red Buddha Theatre, Soft Machine, Fairport Convention, The Blockheads,The Stranglers, John's Children, Alternative TV, Caravan, The Damned, Global Village Trucking Company, King Crimson, Adam and the Ants and The Monochrome Set. As a manual of imagination, it's an amazing exposition on the many different ways a musician can effectively use a single minute; it's also, like the first two editions, a snapshot of a musical moment - a mini-time capsule that makes manifest some of the undercurrents of 2020 musical life as it goes its way unmindful, for the most part, of the commercial fashions of the day. A snapshot, a sampler, a box of variety and delights. 2 CDs in a DVD case with a thick 68p book.
