Basement 5

Basement 5 was a highly original black Post-Punk group formed in 1978. Emerging from the Art Department of London's Island Records HQ, they created politically charged, futurist Dub music. Their lyrics aimed to reflect the struggles faced by young people in Britain during the era of Thatcherism, encompassing issues such as high unemployment, strikes, racism, and working class poverty.

Influenced by artists like Jah Wobble, The Neon Judgement, and Medium Medium among others, Basement 5 carved their own unique path in the music scene. Their innovative sound combined elements of Dub with a socially conscious message that resonated with listeners.

With their thought-provoking lyrics and experimental approach to music-making, Basement 5 left an indelible mark on the Post-Punk genre. They remain an important part of music history for their contribution to political commentary through artistry.
