Lloyd McNeill

Lloyd McNeill is a multidisciplinary artist, well known for his drawing and painting. He was born on April 12, 1935 in Washington, DC, USA and sadly passed away on November 5, 2021 in Brooklyn, NYC, USA. In addition to being a talented musician and composer, he was also a music anthropologist, poet, teacher, and producer.

During the 1960s, McNeill actively participated in the civil-rights movement while producing music for ballet performances as well as creating paintings and installations. His unique musical style combines jazz with Latin, Brazilian and African rhythms that he learned during his travels through Africa and Brazil. Throughout his career as a musician, he collaborated with notable artists such as Nina Simone, Naná Vasconcelos, Ron Carter, Cecil McBee, and many more.

Living in Paris in 1965 allowed McNeill to become friends with Picasso himself. This connection greatly influenced his artistic journey. His deep understanding of various cultures shaped not only his music but also his approach to visual arts. Lloyd McNeill's legacy encompasses not only his contributions to the world of music but also his impactful work as a painter and teacher.
