The Zulu word for "locomotive", Stimela formed from the ashes of guitarist/leader Ray Phiri's previous band, The Cannibals, in 1981 and soon became little short of an institution in their home country of South Africa.
With Ray Phiri on vocals and guitars, Nana Coyote on vocals (1955 - Jul. 5, 2010), Isaac Mtshali on drums, Jabu Sibumbe on bass, Thabelo Kgomo on keyboards, and Lloyd Lelosa on keyboards/piano; Stimela created a unique sound that captivated audiences.
Although Ray Phiri passed away in South Africa in July 2017, his legacy lives on through the music he created with Stimela. Their influential presence has left an indelible mark in the music industry both locally and internationally.
