Clifford Brown

Clifford Brown was an American jazz trumpet player, born on October 30, 1930 in Wilmington, Delaware. He was influenced by jazz legends Dizzy Gillespie and Fats Navarro. Throughout his career, he performed with renowned musicians such as Lionel Hampton, Art Blakey, Sarah Vaughan, and Dinah Washington. In collaboration with drummer Max Roach, Brown formed the Clifford Brown And Max Roach Quintet.

Tragically, in June 1956, while traveling from Philadelphia to Chicago for a performance, Brown and pianist Richie Powell were involved in a fatal car accident on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. The crash claimed their lives along with Nancy Powell's. Clifford Brown is laid to rest at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Wilmington.

Brown's exceptional talent earned him recognition early on; he won the Down Beat critics' poll for 'New Star of the Year' in 1954. Posthumously, he was honored by being inducted into the Down Beat 'Jazz Hall of Fame' in 1972 through the critics' poll.
