+ surprise guests!
Twelve of the seasoned A-List professionals making up the Detroit Rising consortium—musicians, producers, DJs, rappers, vocalists and engineers from Parliament-Funkadelic, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Black Eyed Peas, Mary J. Blige, Bootsy Collins, Prince, Beyonce, A Tribe Called Quest, Childish Gambino and Lady Gaga—will converge for an album release at Rough Trade April 6 for a jam-happy totally trippy set of music and meets that will not only turn heads but keep Brooklyn buzzing for weeks.
We’re talkin’ some serious mind-bending Hendrixian cosmic slop set to go down like never before: a psychedelic electronica revolution cross-pollinating Motown with jazz-rock fusion and funky breaks that might just leave your neck a little sore the morning after. This revolving cast of elite instrumentalists from Detroit are in town to celebrate the March 30 independent release of Detroit Rising: A Cosmic Jazz Funk Adventure on DownJazz Records. Years in the making, Creative Producer David Schwartz has amalgamated a plethora of like-minded musicians to come together to write all-new material spanning the cosmos like Sun Ra. Recorded at the legendary United Sound Motown Studios in Detroit (as well as Hollywood and in the swamps of Florida), this groundbreaking project is filled with a nascent bubbling of heretofore unheard-of propensities heralding a new sub-genre of all-out Rock’n’Roll blackness. The hip-hop and jazz-rock fusion trips coalesce with some sweet soul music to create a newness yet unfound…until now. Those lucky enough to have heard it swear it is bound to create shock waves in a complacent music industry. One can count the sub-genres inherent in this proposition.
P-Funkdrum master Gabe Gonzalez will provide the bump. This is a cat so in-demand that he had to once turn down the drum slot in Red Hot Chili Peppers so he could finish high school. He has since gone on to be aP-Funkmainstay touring all over the world, gigging with Moog master Bernie Worrell and founding the band Enemy Squad. On the Ivory is Bootsy Collins keyboardist Greg Fitz who will spill his liquid essence all over the live mix. Those two are confirmed. Many more amazing musicians—not yet announced—from the bands of those aforementioned artists are coming from a rotating cast of the 20 who participated in this pioneering project. Don’t take our word for it. Come out and see and hear and dance and party hearty while buying vinyl and, thus, outfitting yourself in a free jazz-funkcollectible t-shirt or silk-screened band shirt from famous t-shirt artist Stozo Da Klown whose art has graced merch and album covers for no less thanP-Funk, James Brown and Sly & The Family Stone. Expect surprises. Admission is free.
