Government Issue

Government Issue (often referred to as G.I.) was a punk rock band from Washington, DC. Formed in 1980 and split in 1989, they started as a hardcore band but evolved into alternative rock sounds over time. Singer John "Stabb" Schroeder was the only constant member, while original drummer Marc Alberstadt played with the band until 1986 and bassist-turned-guitarist Tom Lyle joined in 1981 until the end. Brian Baker played with them from 1981 through 1982, and J. Robbins became their final bassist from 1986 until their split.

The band had reunions in 2007 and 2010 for shows but has no plans for a full-time reunion. In a special reunion show in 2014, three-fourths of the "Legless Bull" lineup performed songs from that record as well as the 1980 demo.

In May 2016, John Stabb passed away after battling stomach cancer. Government Issue's music is often associated with other punk bands such as Teen Idles, Battalion Of Saints, S.O.A., Wasted Youth, Scream, Ill Repute, Reagan Youth, The Freeze, JFA, Artificial Peace, Zero Boys, Jerry's Kids Necros Gang Green Dicks Angry Samoans D.I., The Meatmen MDC Agression.
