Gruppo Di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza

Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza (also known as The Group or Il Gruppo) was an avant-garde free improvisation group considered the first experimental composers collective. Formed in Rome in 1964 by Italian composer Franco Evangelisti, the group drew inspiration from jazz, serialism, musique concrete, and other avant-garde techniques developed by contemporary classical music composers such as Luigi Nono and Giacinto Scelsi. Their dedication to developing new music techniques through improvisation, noise-techniques, and anti-musical systems set them apart.

The members of Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza and their frequent guests explored extended techniques on traditional classical instruments, prepared piano, tape music, and electronic music. Over time, their sound evolved to incorporate guitar feedback and funk influences during the 1970s. In addition to performing concerts, the group released a series of albums and contributed to numerous scores composed by Ennio Morricone - a member of *Il Gruppo* - including "Un Tranquillo Posto Di Campagna" (1968) and "Gli occhi freddi della paura" (1971).

Following Franco Evangelisti's death in 1980, the group gradually disbanded. However, their groundbreaking contributions to experimental composition continue to inspire artists today. If you enjoy the innovative works of artists like Cornelius Cardew
