Album of the Month - November 2018
Jerry Paper's first album for Stones Throw, Like A Baby. Available on Rough Trade Exclusive Limited Clear Vinyl, Standard Black Vinyl and CD.
Songwriter, singer, producer and musician Lucas W. Nathan currently lives in L.A. This is his first album for Stones Throw and features contributions from Matty Taveres of BadBadNotGood (who co-produced), Weyes Blood, Alex Brettin from Mild High Club and singer Charlotte Day Wilson.
Trumpets flutter while warped synths play oddball reggae motifs. Understated funk lite floats in a miasma of off the wall melodies and lo-fi pop. Swirls and sways of skewiff jazz make a perfect soundtrack to an alternate waking minor-key psych dreamstate of a cocktail bar.
Jerry Paper is the creative persona of Los Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer Lucas Nathan. Like A Baby is Jerry Paper's first album for Stones Throw. For Like A Baby, Nathan brought on several collaborators including Matty Tavares of BadBadNotGood — who co-produced the album — Weyes Blood, Mild High Club’s Alex Brettin, and vocalist Charlotte Day Wilson. Inspired by a move from NYC back to Nathan’s hometown of LA, Like A Baby explores existential themes tied to “the endless human cycle of desire and satisfaction.” Nathan cites a vast pool of influences on his hazy, distorted universe of music, from fellow pop outliers Prefab Sprout, Todd Rundgren and Steely Dan (“a deep source of inspiration for me”) to classic R&B, Stereolab, avant-garde Brazilian artists, and Japanese electronica.
