Mantronix

Mantronix, one of the most innovative hip-hop acts of all time, was founded by Kurtis el Khaleel. Born in Jamaica and raised in Canada before settling in New York, Mantronik quickly made a name for himself as a DJ and producer. Teaming up with Haitian-born MC Tee, they caught the attention of Sleeping Bag Records and released their debut single "Fresh is the Word" in 1985. Their unique sound blended hip-hop with electronic beats, gaining popularity both on the streets of New York and across the pond in Britain.

With their debut album "The Album" released in 1986, Mantronix continued to make waves with hits like "Needle to the Groove" and "Bassline." As their popularity grew, they signed with Capitol/EMI and released their third album "In Full Effect" in 1988. This marked a shift towards a fusion of dance and R&B while still showcasing Mantronik's talent for clever beats.

Although MC Tee left soon after their third album, Mantronik carried on with new members Bryce Luvah and DJ Dee. They explored different genres such as straight-ahead dance music on albums like "This Should Move Ya" (1990) and "The Incredible Sound Machine" (1991). Eventually, Mantronix disbanded as a group but Kurtis Mantronik returned as a solo artist later on.
