Songs Of The Plains

Album of the Month - November 2018

Colter Wall's sophomore album Songs Of The Plains.

The Saskatchewan, Swift Current / Saskatoon-based singer-songwriter/musician put out one of our albums of the year in 2017. This one was recorded with Dave Cobb in RCA Studio A and includes Lloyd Green on pedal steel, Chris Powell on drums and spoons, Corb Lund on vocals and Micky Raphael on harmonica. As well as originals it includes covers of tracks by Billy Don Burns, Wilf Carter and some traditional cowboy songs.

Just the album to put on to sooth your troubled soul when you’ve had too much moonshine and the joy has left your heart. This is proper cowboy music. A deep and earthy rich crooning country voice that could keep many a prairie-man happy over long rides on Old Paint (or feed the ears of truckers crossing the highway). Everything you want from a country & western album. Stripped down plucked guitars, crying lap steel, mournful harmonica and a poetic turn of phrase for fans of old-tyme style.

A little over a year after dropping his self-titled debut, the country/folk up-and-comer Colter Wall pays tribute to his home country with his second album Songs of the Plains. The Steve Earle-inspired Canadian troubadour says it was important to him on this record to create a musical landscape that fits the physical one he grew up in. Wall recorded the album at RCA Studio A with Grammy Award-winning legendary producer Dave Cobb who also contributes acoustic guitar to the project. In addition to the seven original tracks on the album, Wall also included a handful of cowboy traditionals (“Night Herding Song” and “Tying Knots in the Devil’s Tail.”) and covers from some of his own musical icons including versions of Billy Don Burns’ “Wild Dogs,” and Wilf Carter’s “Calgary Round-Up”. Available on Standard Black Vinyl and Standard CD via Thirty Tigers.
