Pigbag

Pigbag was a British post-punk band that was active from 1980 to 1983. The band was started by Chris Hamlin in Cheltenham in late 1980, and he recruited several talented musicians including Roger Freeman, Chris Lee, James Johnstone, Andrew "Chip" Carpenter, and Mark Smith. Their first hit, "[en]Papa's Got a Brand New Pigbag[/en]," was developed during informal rehearsals before the band was formed.

With the help of manager Dick O'Dell, Pigbag landed their first gig supporting [en]The Pop Group[/en]. The crowd's enthusiastic response led to them recording their first song for O'Dell's label [en]Y Records[/en]. The instrumental release of "[en]Papa's Got a Brand New Pigbag[/en]" became an underground dance hit and achieved success on independent charts.

In April 1982, Pigbag released their debut album "[en]Dr. Heckle & Mr Jive[/en]," which topped the indie charts for several weeks. They embarked on a major college tour but faced internal struggles within the band. Despite this, they re-released "[en]Papa's Got a Brand New Pigbag[/en]," which reached number 3 on UK charts and made two appearances on "Top of the Pops."
