Prince Buster

Prince Buster, born on May 24, 1938 in Kingston, Jamaica, was a pioneering figure in Jamaican music. He started his career working with Clement "Coxsone" Dodd and later established his own Voice Of The People sound system, record label, and shop. Buster produced numerous records featuring himself and other top acts of the time backed by Prince Buster's All Stars. His contributions to the ska era were immense, releasing classics on various labels such as WildBells and Voice Of The People. He enjoyed repeated success thanks to the respect bestowed by ska revivalists like Madness and The Specials.

Buster's first recording session in 1960 resulted in the hit song "Oh Carolina," which showcased his inventive style by incorporating elements of niahbinghi into popular Jamaican music. Throughout his career, he released records on labels such as Soulsville Center, Islam, Olive Blossom Records, Prince Buster Records Shack, and more. His influence extended beyond ska into rocksteady and reggae.

Prince Buster's impact on Jamaican music continued through multiple decades as he made comebacks during various ska revivals. In the late 1970s to early 1980s, UK groups like Madness, The Specials, The Beat, The Selecter,and Bad Manners paid tribute to him. His legacy remains strong as one of the most influential figures in Jamaican music history.
