Words from the band

I Think I Need a New Heart

- We’re all big fans of the magnetic fields in Black Country, New Road. We tried to listen to 69 Love Songs in the van once but there were simply too many songs. The one that resonated with all of us is this one. It’s our favourite one on there. A fun fact about our performance on this song is that we all play percussion on it.

So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings

- We were originally going to cover You’re the Voice by John Farnham, but when it came down to it in the studio, it just didn’t sound right. We decided to have a go at covering Caroline Polachek’s famous song ‘So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings’ instead. A fun fact about this track is that on one of the layers of the guitar solo, May is actually playing the guitar through the piano. Lewis is doing lead vocals on this one.

Us

- This song is originally by Regina Spektor. We all absolutely love Regina Spektor, she’s great. We tried to do a wonderful song some justice. When you’re recording four tracks in one day it’s a tough thing to do. The track is also much faster than we originally thought. We started by playing it slower and then had to speed up on the later takes. A really cool fact about this take is that we recorded it on my birthday (I am Charlie the drummer) One of the first takes isn’t of us playing Us, it’s actually of everyone singing happy birthday to me. It didn’t make the final cut though.

Happier Than Ever

- Another classic song. I think we’ve all spoken at length about our admiration for Billie Eilish and her brilliant song ‘Happier Than Ever’. I first heard it when we were in the studio recording our album ‘Ants From Up There’. I was delighted to hear such a wonderful song. It is the only one of these tracks that we have ever performed live in concert. It may well remain that way. An interesting side note about this take is that although I’m (Charlie the drummer) credited on playing the drums and vocals on this track, I only play for half of it. One half of the take is performed by a computer that studied my playing and performed an imitation of my drumming.
