This album has been recorded as an analogue album. It was recorded on 2 inch 24 track analogue tape and mixed onto half inch analogue tape and mastered with no digital processing involved. twenty two years after the release of the now legendary 'loveless' comes the perfectly titled 'mbv'. they haven't re-written the rule book here (they did that over two decades ago), but they are still possibly one of the most unique sounding bands in history. 'mbv' is nine stunning tracks in just under forty seven minutes and completely worth the wait. 'she found now' sets the tone with it's slow distorted burn and submerged melody before making way for the crisper groove of 'only tomorrow'. 'who sees you' rides a reverbed break drenched in those perfectly wonky guitars while 'is this and yes' finds belinda gently bringing a beatless synthline to life. 'if i am' seems to bring the ghost of stereolab back to life where once again belinda's vocal washes over a a keyboard stabbed groove all crushed by distortion. pretty amazing stuff. and then it gets even better. 'new you' could be the be the nearest (other than 'soon') they have ever come to the perfect pop song. delayed guitars, a hip hop break and that mbv flute sound in perfect harmony. 'in another way', 'nothing is' and 'wonder 2' end the comeback with it's heaviest moments - 'nothing is' bringing to mind lightning bolt on loop and 'wonder 2' rocking on all cylinders over a drum and bass rhythm. people could have been expecting more from this return but just put the album on and remember why my bloody valentine are so damn unique. nobody does it better.
