Staff Benda Bilili

Staff Benda Bilili is a group of paraplegic street musicians from Kinshasa, the capital city of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They play music rooted in soukous, with elements of old-school rhythm and blues and reggae. The band consists of four senior singers/guitarists who move around on customized tricycles due to their poliomyelitis condition. They are supported by a younger rhythm section made up of abandoned street children taken under their protection. Additionally, an 18-year-old boy plays electrified solos on a one-stringed lute he designed from a tin can.

Their name, translated from Lingala, means "look beyond appearances."
