Steve Reich

Steve Reich is a composer born on October 3, 1936 in New York City, USA. He studied composition privately with Hall Overton and later attended Juilliard School to study with William Bergsma and Vincent Persichetti. Reich then pursued his master's degree in composition at Mills College under the guidance of Luciano Berio and Darius Milhaud.

Inspired by Terry Riley's minimalist works, Reich began creating his own compositions using simple musical patterns combined in a slowly-shifting manner. His first major work, "It's Gonna Rain..." was written in 1965. Over time, he explored different musical processes such as augmentation to create more intricate pieces.

Reich's mother is June Carroll, a Broadway singer and lyricist.
