The Modern Lovers

Boston-based band formed by Jonathan Richman, The Modern Lovers, existed from 1970 to 1974. Despite recording two studio albums during this time, the demos remained unreleased until 1976 and 1981. The band was initially inspired by the sound of the Velvet Underground, with Richman even spending time in New York City immersing himself in their music. After returning home, he quickly organized a band consisting of childhood friend John Felice on guitar, David Robinson on drums (later of The Cars), and Rolfe Anderson on bass. They played their first show just a month after Richman's return.

The Modern Lovers can be compared to artists such as Richard Hell, Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers, Television, and more. Their unique blend of rock and punk influences made them stand out in the music scene at the time.

Although short-lived as a band, The Modern Lovers left a lasting impact on the Boston music scene and beyond with their raw energy and distinctive sound.
