Rhino Records, also known as Rhino, is a renowned music label that was established in 1973 by Richard Foos. Starting as a record store in Westwood California, Rhino quickly gained recognition with its first successful release "Go To Rhino Records" by Wild Man Fischer in 1975. The label's early logo featured "Rocky the Rhino" and focused on novelty, surf, local new wave bands, and reissues of out-of-print records from other labels.

Under the guidance of Bill Inglot for production, Ken Perry for mastering, and A&R team Gary Stewart and James Austin, Rhino expanded its catalog to include a wide range of reissues by the mid-1980s. The label underwent a logo redesign during this time period to simply "Rhino". In 1984, Rhino released its first CD and became known for manufacturing high-quality CDs made by Sanyo (1984-85) and various manufacturers from Japan or Switzerland thereafter.

In 1985, Rhino entered into a distribution deal with Capitol Records which lasted until 1992. This partnership allowed access to Capitol's back catalog and led to the release of reissues of old Capitol albums. Additionally, EMI and Rhino acquired the Roulette family of labels in 1989. As their deal with Capitol came to an end in 1992, Time-Warner offered an opportunity for growth. Half of the label was sold to Time-Warner

Art Blakey (1919-1990) was an American jazz drummer, composer, and bandleader. He is best known as the founder and leader of The Jazz Messengers. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Blakey began his musical journey as a pianist but switched to drums after being ordered to do so at gunpoint by a nightclub owner. He learned from legendary drummer Chick Webb and later formed his own band, backing pianist Mary Lou Williams. Blakey played with notable musicians such as Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie before organizing the Seventeen Messengers and recording with the octet called the Jazz Messengers.

In 1948, Blakey visited Africa where he discovered polyrhythmic drumming and embraced Islam, taking on the name Abdullah Ibn Buhaina. Throughout the 1950s, he performed with renowned artists like Miles Davis, Clifford Brown, and Horace Silver. His collaboration with Silver led to the formation of The Jazz Messengers. This group became a platform for young talent under Blakey's leadership until his passing.

Recognized as a major figure in modern jazz, Art Blakey made significant contributions to the genre both as a musician and mentor over three decades. His impact on drums and his ability to nurture emerging talent cannot be overstated.

Art Blakey was an exceptional musician, but not only because he succeeded in recruiting the best players to join his Messengers. He also had the skill to blaze new trails through forms of jazz that continuously evolved. Beginning in the Forties with the big bands of Fletcher Henderson and Billy Eckstine, he went on to play with Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk and Dizzy Gillespie… And then Blakey met up with Horace Silver in the mid-Fifties to found the Jazz Messengers. It was with this band that Blakey would open his arms to all the best young musicians of this generation: he nurtured the likes of Hank Mobley, Jackie McLean, Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard and many others. The first two sides of this album give an all too brief illustration of this aspect of the drummer, while sides three and four feature the inventiveness and rhythmical sense of a great percussionist who never renounced his African origins.
