Autopsy is a death metal band formed in San Francisco in 1987 by ex-Death drummer Chris Reifert, who also handles vocals. The band consists of guitarists Eric Cutler and Danny Coralles, and bassist Ken Sorvari. Autopsy gained recognition with their demo "Critical Madness" in 1988, leading to a record deal with Peaceville records. Their debut album "Severed Survival" was released two years later and featured bass tracks from Steve DiGiorgio of Sadus.

In 1991, Autopsy released two EPs, "Fiend for Blood" and "Retribution for the Dead," as well as an LP titled "Mental Funeral." Despite the release of their third full-length album "Acts of the Unspeakable," which included new bassist Josh Barohn (formerly of Suffocation), the band struggled to gain traction. However, this album became known for its disturbing cover art.

After a period of little activity, Autopsy returned in 1995 with the album "Shitfun," featuring yet another new bassist Freeway Migliore. Following its release, the band disbanded and pursued other projects. In 2001, they released the compilation album "Torn from the Grave."

Peaceville is an English label founded by Paul Halmshaw, also known as Hammy, in 1987. The label primarily focuses on metal music and has gained a reputation for its high-quality releases. In 2000, Peaceville was sold to Snapper Music but continues to thrive under their ownership.

Throughout its history, Peaceville has used various catalog number formats to distinguish different types of releases. From 1987 to 1995, the label used "VILE ### T" for 12-inch singles, maxis, and EPs; "VILE ###" for LPs; and "VILE ### P" for picture LPs. From 1987 to 2002, CD releases were labeled as "CDVILE### / VILE ### CD," while MCDs/singles/EPs were labeled as "CDMVILE### / VILE ### TCD." Limited CDs were marked with "CDXVILE###."

In later years, Peaceville introduced new catalog number formats such as "CC#" for the Collectors Club series of 7-inch records in 1993-1994. First time since its initial release in 1991 and contains the original sleeve artwork. ‘Retribution for the Dead’ was Autopsy’s first EP, sandwiched in between their all-time death metal classic albums, ‘Severed Survival’ &amp; ‘Mental Funeral’. With the core trio of Chris Reifert, Eric Cutler &amp; Danny Coralles joined by Steve Cutler on bass, Autopsy delivered another rotten dose of punishing and deranged death metal. ‘Retribution for the Dead’ notably includes earlier versions of the tracks ‘In the Grip of Winter’ and ‘Des ned to Fester’, which were then to appear in re-recorded form on the band’s second LP, ‘Mental Funeral’. Autopsy originally disbanded in the mid 90’s following their fourth album, the tastefully tled ‘Shittun’, (going on to form sickadelic deathsters, Abscess) before returning from the grave in the late 2000’s. They have successfully spread the sickness far and wide to global audiences since, whilst continuing to inspire a whole generation of metal bands, having been no strangers to controversy themselves along the way for pushing the boundaries of extremity.
