Short for "Subterranean Pop" 

The label was an outgrowth of [a=Bruce Pavitt]'s Olympia, WA based (print) fanzine, which became the well respected cassettezine of the same name. 

After his move to Seattle he ran a music column in the Seattle Rocket also called Sub Pop.

After initial forays into the record label world with a [a=Green River] 7" (not officially on Sub Pop) and the Sub Pop 100 LP, the label exploded onto the indie scene with four influential colored vinyl 7"s which included [a=Mudhoney]'s "Touch Me I'm Sick" which made the year-end top 10 playlist of nearly every music journalist in the world.

Subsequent hyping of the label in the English music press put them on the map, and grunge was born.

Flight of the Conchords is a New Zealand-based comedy band composed of Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement. Their unique blend of comedy and music has garnered them international acclaim. They gained popularity through their BBC radio series and later, an American television series on HBO. With their witty lyrics and catchy tunes, Flight of the Conchords has become a household name in the world of comedy music.

The duo humorously referred to themselves as "New Zealand's fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo." Despite this self-deprecating title, they have managed to capture the hearts of fans worldwide with their hilarious performances. Today, they proudly hold the title of being "the almost award-winning fourth-most-popular folk duo in New Zealand."

In October of 2018, ten years after the launch of their hit HBO series, musical comedians Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement returned to HBO for the all-new comedy special. Live in London was taped before a live audience at the Eventim Apollo and featured the Conchords performing songs from the sold-out UK and Ireland edition of Flight of the Conchords Sing Flight of the Conchords Tour.The duo also performed the song on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in the fall of 2018. New Zealanders McKenzie and Clement debuted on HBO in 2005 in an edition of the comedy series One-Night Stand, returning to the network in 2007 for the debut season of their acclaimed, Emmy-nominated series Flight of the Conchords, which followed fictionalized versions of their lives in New York City.
