John Coltrane was an American saxophonist and jazz composer. He was one of the most influential musicians of the twentieth century, known for his contributions to bebop, hardbop, modal jazz, and free jazz. Coltrane recorded over fifty albums as a leader and collaborated with legendary artists such as Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk. His music evolved to become increasingly spiritual throughout his life. Recognized for his masterful improvisation and iconic centrality to the history of jazz, Coltrane received numerous awards including a posthumous special citation from the Pulitzer Prize Board in 2007.Born on September 23, 1926 in Hamlet, North Carolina, USA, John Coltrane passed away on July 17, 1967 at the age of forty due to liver cancer. Despite his untimely death, his legacy continues to inspire generations of musicians.Coltrane's musical journey extended beyond himself; he married pianist Alice Coltrane and their son Ravi Coltrane followed in his father's footsteps as a talented saxophonist.

Blue Note is a record label that has made a significant impact in the jazz genre. Founded in 1939 by Alfred Lion and Max Margulis, Blue Note focused on traditional jazz and swing recordings, producing timeless classics. In the 1950s, it became one of the first labels to feature bop musicians. After being acquired by *Universal Music Group* in 1965, Blue Note expanded its repertoire to include more commercially-oriented music like jazz-fusion. Throughout the years, Blue Note underwent various changes in ownership and reissue programs but continued to release new recordings and previously unreleased material.

In 1982, Blue Note catalog reissues began appearing on *United Artists Records*, which was owned by Michael Cuscuna who oversaw the UA-era reissue program. The label was later relaunched as part of *Capitol-EMI's* subsidiary *Manhattan Records* in 1985. It was during this time that Blue Note released key albums from its history and introduced previously unissued material.

In 1989, Blue Note became the division under which all of Capitol-EMI's jazz activities were organized. However, two years later, *Manhattan Records* was revived for smooth jazz and pop-jazz releases while Blue Note continued to thrive as a prominent label within Capitol-EMI's roster.

To mark the 65th anniversary of the album’s recording, Blue Train is released in two special editions as part of Blue Note’s acclaimed Tone Poet Audiophile Vinyl Reissue Series. A 1-LP mono pressing of the original album is presented in a deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket, while the 2-LP stereo collection Blue Train: The Complete Masters includes a second disc featuring seven alternate and incomplete takes, none of which have been released previously on vinyl, and four of which have never been released before on any format. The Complete Masters comes with a booklet featuring never-before-seen session photos by Francis Wolff and an essay by Coltrane expert Ashley Kahn. Both Tone Poet Vinyl Editions were produced by Joe Harley, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original analog master tapes, and pressed on 180g vinyl at RTI.
