Rhino Records, also known as Rhino, is a renowned music label that was established in 1973 by Richard Foos. Starting as a record store in Westwood California, Rhino quickly gained recognition with its first successful release "Go To Rhino Records" by Wild Man Fischer in 1975. The label's early logo featured "Rocky the Rhino" and focused on novelty, surf, local new wave bands, and reissues of out-of-print records from other labels.

Under the guidance of Bill Inglot for production, Ken Perry for mastering, and A&R team Gary Stewart and James Austin, Rhino expanded its catalog to include a wide range of reissues by the mid-1980s. The label underwent a logo redesign during this time period to simply "Rhino". In 1984, Rhino released its first CD and became known for manufacturing high-quality CDs made by Sanyo (1984-85) and various manufacturers from Japan or Switzerland thereafter.

In 1985, Rhino entered into a distribution deal with Capitol Records which lasted until 1992. This partnership allowed access to Capitol's back catalog and led to the release of reissues of old Capitol albums. Additionally, EMI and Rhino acquired the Roulette family of labels in 1989. As their deal with Capitol came to an end in 1992, Time-Warner offered an opportunity for growth. Half of the label was sold to Time-Warner

Joni Mitchell is a Canadian musician, songwriter, and painter born on November 7, 1943, in Fort Macleod, Alberta. She began her career singing in small nightclubs in Western Canada and then busking on the streets of Toronto. In the mid-1960s, she moved to New York City and became famous as both a songwriter and singer. Her personal album "Blue" was ranked #30 on Rolling Stone magazine's "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list. Mitchell's music evolved over time, incorporating jazz influences and addressing social and environmental themes. She is also an accomplished visual artist.

Throughout her career, Joni Mitchell has collaborated with renowned jazz musicians such as Pat Metheny, Wayne Shorter, Jaco Pastorius, Herbie Hancock, and Charles Mingus. Her unique guitar style and complex piano arrangements set her apart from other artists of her time.

In recent years, Mitchell has focused more on painting but released her first album of new songs in nine years titled "Shine" in 2007. Despite reducing her recording and touring schedule since the 1980s, she remains a highly influential figure in the music industry.

A reference to the migration of the prophet Mohammad in the seventh century, the term to Mitchell symbolised the sensation of "leaving the dream, no blame" – or, "running away, honourably." Largely written as Mitchell travelled alone across the United States and came to terms with her own mental, emotional, and physical health, the sparsely arranged Hejira is the sound of starting over; embracing change; meditating on the divide between free will and possession; channelling the colours, looks, and feelings of landscapes seen and imagined. The 1976 work – deemed the 133rd Greatest Album of All Time by Rolling Stone – also features Mitchell diving into the deep end of the jazz spectrum and partnering on several songs with virtuosic bassist and fellow sonic cosmonaut Jaco Pastorius.
