Trumpeter, bandleader, composer, and one of the most important figures in jazz music history. Miles Davis adopted a variety of musical directions in his five-decade career that kept him at the forefront of many major stylistic developments in jazz. Born on May 26, 1926 in Alton, Illinois, USA and passed away on September 28, 1991 in Santa Monica, California at the age of 65. He is best known for his seminal modern jazz album "Kind of Blue" (1959), which remains the highest selling jazz album of all time with six million copies sold.Miles Davis studied at an academic school for musicians in NYC where he met Charlie Parker and they started playing together from 1945. In 1948, Miles Davis formed his own ensembles and collaborated with Gil Evans to create The Miles Davis Nonet. Their recordings from 1949 to 1950 resulted in the album "Birth of the Cool" (1957) and laid the foundation for their future collaborations.A pioneer of 'Hard Bop' in the mid-1950s, Miles Davis constantly pushed boundaries throughout his career. In the late 1960s, he ventured into experimenting with electronic instruments and incorporating rock and funk rhythms into his music. Despite health problems leading to a hiatus from playing in the mid-1970s, he made a comeback with an 'electronical' sound in 1980.

a uniquely creative collaboration between miles davis and gil evans including the bonus recordings 'song of our country' plus 'concierto de aranjuez parts one and two' - with unique mock vinyl printed black disc presented in superb die-cut sealed card picture sleeve. the crown jewel of the epic evans / davis triptych that began with 'miles ahead' and 'porgy and bess', 'sketches of spain' is as emotionally compelling as any performance in the trumpeter's remarkable body of works. combining as it does the emotional gravity of two cultures - the deep song of flamenco music and the rich lament of the blues - 'sketches of spain' is a musical hybrid of enormous power and beauty. gil evans' immense canvas of orchestral colours inspires some of davis' most deeply felt solo flights. he paints vast vistas of velvety, shimmering night sounds, and through it all runs the mountainous backbone of spain's native rhythms and chants. the centrepiece of 'sketches of spain' is the evans / davis treatment of the second movement of rodrigo's 'concierto de aranjuez'. evans' charts engage davis in a shifting, insistent dialogue, italicising the trumpeter's subtle variations and timbral ecstasies with magnificent orchestral flourishes. the surreal patina of three flutes and harp, high muted trumpets and woodwinds, and subterranean trombones, french horns and tuba that define one of the main variations on the theme, is a majestic foil for davis' expressive tones. gil evans liked to say that after louis armstrong, no one had affected the sound of the trumpet like miles davis. miles fashioned a vibrato-less, introspective brass cry, made all the more lovely by his lush use of the middle and lower registers. davis' manipulation of pitch on 'saeta' and 'solea' is so idiomatic, so vocalised, so full of revel and lament, it pierces your heart with heroic resignation and longing. 'sketches of spain' stands alone as one of the pillars of modern music.
