The Beginning:
On July 28th, 1967, the label Trojan was launched by Island Records, one of the UK's leading independent record companies. Created as a sub-label to showcase the productions of Jamaican producer Arthur "Duke" Reid, Trojan quickly became synonymous with reggae music. The label took its name from Reid's powerful sound system and Jamaican label active at the same time. Despite being short-lived initially, Trojan highlighted some of the finest music from Jamaica during the Rocksteady era. After its demise, Trojan was resurrected and went on to dominate the Jamaican records market in the UK.
In the 60s and 70s, Trojan Records successfully spread Reggae throughout the UK and beyond by licensing Jamaican recordings and producing UK-based acts. The parent company was sold to Allied in the 1970s, who continued releasing records under Trojan Records. In 2001, Sanctuary Records Group Ltd acquired the full catalogue of Trojan Records. Subsequently, Universal Music Group purchased Sanctuary in 2007 and later sold it to BMG in 2013. Since then, BMG has distributed Trojan Records in Europe through PIAS. Reissues on Music On Vinyl since 2017 are handled by Townsend Music.
Trojan continues to be a legendary label that has played a significant role in promoting reggae music worldwide.

The Paragons are a Jamaican vocal group known for their rocksteady tracks. Originally formed as The Binders, the group consisted of Bob Andy, Garth Evans (aka Tyrone Evans), Junior Menz, and Leroy Stamp. In 1964, John Holt replaced Stamp and Howard Barrett replaced Menz, leading to a name change to The Paragons. After Bob Andy left in 1965, the group continued as a trio.
Following Holt's departure to pursue a solo career, the group collaborated with Roslyn Sweat and later Vic Taylor. This new trio recorded three albums together. In the early 1980s, after Blondie covered their song "The Tide Is High," the classic line-up of Holt/Barrett/Evans reformed briefly before Holt left again after recording with [a5064].

The Paragons were on the finest vocal harmony reggae bands. With their northern soul influenced debut album On The Beach they created their own essential reggae album. It features one of their best known songs, the 60s hit The Tide Is High, later on successfully covered by Blondie. It’s just one of the many songs in which they show their harmonic sounds. Other gems which are recorded for the album are Island in the Sun and Happy-Go-Lucky Girl. Formed in Kingston, Jamaica, the Paragons originally started out as a vocal group heavily influenced by American Soul music. After John Holt joined the group and became its leader they softened their soulful sound and went for a more root-heavy, Rocksteady approach. With success; the Paragons became the most popular Rocksteady vocal act in Jamaica and in Britain. Money problems eventually led to the band’s breakup but the Paragons recordings are still some of the most wonderful and sublime moments in Jamaican Pop.
