Candido

Candido was a Cuban-born percussionist known for his exceptional skills on the conga and bongo drums. Born on April 22, 1921 in Regla, Havana, Cuba, he began his career as a percussionist in various groups in Havana, performing at nightclubs and radio stations. In 1946, Candido moved to New York where he quickly made a name for himself by recording with renowned artists such as Machito and Dizzy Gillespie.

During the early 1950s, Candido joined the Billy Taylor quartet and later performed and recorded with Stan Kenton in 1954. His talent extended beyond jazz music as he achieved success during the disco era with his cover of Babatunde Olatunji's classic "Jingo," which became a hit under Salsoul Records.

Candido's contributions to Afro-Cuban and straight-ahead jazz have left an indelible mark on the music industry. With his rhythmic mastery and captivating performances, he has influenced countless musicians throughout his career. Although Candido passed away on November 7, 2020 in New York City, USA, his legacy continues to inspire aspiring percussionists worldwide.
