Duke Pearson

American jazz pianist, producer, bandleader, composer, and arranger. Duke Pearson was born on August 17, 1932 in Atlanta, Georgia and passed away on August 4, 1980 in the same city. He gained recognition after moving to New York City in January 1959 and joining trumpeter *Donald Byrd's* newly formed band. Pearson also accompanied *Nancy Wilson* on tour in 1961. Following the passing of *Alfred Lion* in 1963, Pearson took over his position as A&R man for Blue Note Records.

Throughout the 1960s, Duke Pearson was a sought-after session musician and producer for numerous Blue Note albums while also recording his own albums as a bandleader. His notable composition 'Cristo Redentor' for *Donald Byrd* in 1964 has been covered by various artists including *Dizzy Gillespie* and *Grant Green*.

In the 1970s, Pearson was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis which eventually led to his passing at Atlanta Veterans Hospital in 1980.
