Sidney Bechet

Sidney Bechet was an American jazz saxophonist, clarinetist, and composer. He was one of the first important soloists in jazz and is considered the first notable jazz saxophonist. Bechet's forceful delivery, well-constructed improvisations, and distinctive wide vibrato defined his playing style. Despite his erratic temperament hindering his career, he eventually gained widespread acclaim in the late 1940s.

Bechet began his career at a young age, playing in the jazz bands of Bunk Johnson and Clarence Williams. From the 1920s onwards, he primarily performed abroad in London & Paris as well as New York City. In 1932, he co-founded The New Orleans Feetwarmers with Tommy Ladnier. After World War II, Bechet spent most of his time living in Paris.
