Epic doom metal band from Sweden led by bassist/songwriter Leif Edling. Candlemass was formed after the disbandment of Edling's previous band, Nemesis. Their debut album "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus" in 1986 and its follow up "Nightfall" in 1987 are highly regarded within the doom metal genre. Vocalist Eddie Marcolin joined the band for "Nightfall" and recorded two more albums before leaving in 1990. Thomas Vikström took over as vocalist for one more album before the band split in 1993.
In the late 1990s, Edling revived Candlemass with new line-ups and released two more albums. In 2005, the classic line-up of Edling, Marcolin, drummer Jan Lindh, and guitarists Lars Johansson and Mats Björkman reunited for a self-titled album. However, relations with Marcolin deteriorated again during preparations for a follow-up album. American singer Robert Lowe from Solitude Aeturnus became his replacement.

Peaceville is an English label founded by Paul Halmshaw, also known as Hammy, in 1987. The label primarily focuses on metal music and has gained a reputation for its high-quality releases. In 2000, Peaceville was sold to Snapper Music but continues to thrive under their ownership.

Throughout its history, Peaceville has used various catalog number formats to distinguish different types of releases. From 1987 to 1995, the label used "VILE ### T" for 12-inch singles, maxis, and EPs; "VILE ###" for LPs; and "VILE ### P" for picture LPs. From 1987 to 2002, CD releases were labeled as "CDVILE### / VILE ### CD," while MCDs/singles/EPs were labeled as "CDMVILE### / VILE ### TCD." Limited CDs were marked with "CDXVILE###."

In later years, Peaceville introduced new catalog number formats such as "CC#" for the Collectors Club series of 7-inch records in 1993-1994. Re-issued CDs with slipcases from 1999 onwards are labeled as "CDVILEM###." Since 2002, CDs have been designated as "CDVILEF###," limited CDs as "CDVILEF###X," MCDs/singles/EPs as "CD

'Nightfall' was the second Candlemass studio album and saw its release in 1987. Alongside first album 'Epicus Doomicus Metallicus', 'Nightfall' was instrumental in shaping the Doom Metal scene that exists to this day. On 'Nightfall', making his debut with the band was vocalist Jan Alfredo Marcolin, better known as Messiah Marcolin, who became a well-established and highly respected vocalist throughout the Metal world, with his powerful soaring and theatrical tones. Messiah Marcolin became an iconic figure within the band until his departure in the early 1990's. 'Nightfall' is a continuation of the band's debut; with highly effective epic and melodic heavy doom compositions. The album truly helped define the genre and paved the way for Doom Metal's future, with bands such as Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride often hailing Candlemass as being among their primary inspirations.
