Max Roach was an American jazz drummer, bandleader, and artist. He was born on January 10, 1924 in Newland, Pasquotank County, North Carolina and passed away on August 16, 2007 in Manhattan, New York City at the age of 83. Roach was married to singer Abbey Lincoln and their daughter was a talented viola player.
Roach is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished jazz drummers and percussionists of his time. Throughout his career, he collaborated with legendary jazz musicians such as Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus and Sonny Rollins.

Candid is an American jazz label from New York that was founded in late 1960. It started as a subsidiary of Cadence Records and released its first albums in January 1961. Led by Bob Altshuler and produced by Nat Hentoff, Candid issued about 30 LPs before coming to an end in late 1961.

However, nearly three decades later, Alan Bates, the owner of London-based Black Lion label, revived the name Candid Records. In 1989, he renamed his own label to Candid Records and began reissuing all the classic titles from the original Candid label.

Today, Candid is an independent and award-winning UK jazz label. It has gained recognition for its exceptional catalog of jazz music. Distributed by ZYX Music in Germany since 1995, Candid continues to bring forth outstanding jazz recordings to audiences worldwide.

On It's Time, he takes again the Civil Rights themes of his previous album, Percussion Bitter Sweet, and applies a choir to them, giving his musical and political thrust an almost godly urgency. Here, the musical and the political are impossible to separate and Roach uses these voices to provoke and discomfort us.The orchestra and chorus were arranged and conducted by composer Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson, and renowned singer Abbey Lincoln is featured on the closing composition, 'Lonesome Lover.' All the compositions are by Max Roach.
