Mudhoney is an American alternative rock band that was formed in Seattle, Washington in 1988. The band was created by vocalist Mark Arm and former guitarist Steve Turner after the split of the influential Seattle band Green River.

Although Mudhoney did not achieve the same level of fame as some of their label and city mates, they were a significant part of the early 90s grunge scene. With their enduring presence, they have become one of the most respected and long-lasting groups from that era.

Known for their raw and energetic sound, Mudhoney has left a lasting impact on alternative rock music. Their contributions to the genre continue to be celebrated by fans around the world.

Short for "Subterranean Pop" 

The label was an outgrowth of [a=Bruce Pavitt]'s Olympia, WA based (print) fanzine, which became the well respected cassettezine of the same name. 

After his move to Seattle he ran a music column in the Seattle Rocket also called Sub Pop.

After initial forays into the record label world with a [a=Green River] 7" (not officially on Sub Pop) and the Sub Pop 100 LP, the label exploded onto the indie scene with four influential colored vinyl 7"s which included [a=Mudhoney]'s "Touch Me I'm Sick" which made the year-end top 10 playlist of nearly every music journalist in the world.

Subsequent hyping of the label in the English music press put them on the map, and grunge was born.

It also contains a genuine love song in closing track “Little Dogs,” an ode to the simple joys of hanging out with tiny canines.Mudhoney (vocalist Mark Arm, guitarist Steve Turner, bassist Guy Maddison, and drummer Dan Peters) remain the ur underground group, their gnarly primordial punk stew and Arm’s sharply funny lyrics as potent a combination as they’ve been since the band’s formation in the late 1980s. When asked why they continue making records nearly four decades after forming, Arm’s answer is simple.“We like each other, and we like being in a band together,” says Arm. “Some people have poker night or whatever the fuck, and they have the excuse to get together with their friends. For us, this [band] is that. This is what we do.”
