The Smiths were an English rock band formed in Manchester in 1982. The group consisted of vocalist Morrissey, guitarist Johnny Marr, bassist Andy Rourke, and drummer Mike Joyce. Critics have called them one of the most important bands to emerge from the British independent music scene of the 1980s.
In 2002, the NME named The Smiths as "the artist to have had the most influence on the NME". Their impact was further recognized when all four of their albums appeared on Rolling Stone's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" in 2003.
Despite their significant achievements, internal tensions led to The Smiths breaking up in 1987. Since then, they have turned down several offers to reunite. With their unique sound and influential presence, The Smiths continue to be revered by fans and musicians alike.

the smiths were the definitive british independent band of the eighties, releasing a remarkable series of singles and albums between 1983 and 1987 that were both commercially and critically successful and which laid down a marker for guitar pop-rock that remains unsurpassed. 'the sound of the smiths' comprises 45 tracks and presents all the smiths' single releases, reinstating singles that were scheduled through eventually unreleased ('still ill' and 'you just haven't earned it yet baby') plus european only singles such as 'barbarism begins at home' and 'the headmaster ritual'. the core of disc one, however, is that matchless run of singles from their first rough trade 7" single 'hand in glove' through to 'last night i dreamt that somebody loved me'. the collection includes genuine classics such as 'heaven knows i'm miserable now' 'how soon is now', 'panic' and 'girlfriend in a coma' which marked the pinnacle of that unique creative collaboration between vocalist morrissey and guitarist johnny marr. indeed, morrissey's eloquence and proselytising was always matched by the compelling musicianship of marr, bassist andy rourke and drummer mike joyce. the second cd adds a further 22 tracks including rare b-sides, tracks that were exclusive to 12" releases and selected live recordings. among the rarities are the troy tate produced 'pretty girls make graves' and 'what's the world', a cover of a track from the fellow manchester band james, recorded live at barrowlands, glasgow. all tracks have been newly remastered by frank arkwright.
