Born in Spanish Harlem, New York City to Puerto Rican parents, Puente became known as "El Rey Del Timbal" ("The King Of The Timbales"). He was a multi-talented artist who played various instruments including vibraphone, drum kit, conga drums, claves, piano, saxophone and clarinet.
