Metallica is a thrash metal band from Los Angeles, California. Formed in 1981 by vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich, the band quickly gained recognition with their contribution to the compilation record "Metal Massacre". With the addition of bassist Cliff Burton and lead guitarist Kirk Hammett, Metallica released their debut LP "Kill 'Em All" in 1983. They went on to release several critically acclaimed albums including "Master Of Puppets" and the self-titled "Black Album", which became one of the best-selling rock albums of all time.

Throughout their career, Metallica has experimented with different music styles, including alternative rock on albums like "Load" and "Reload". In 1999, they collaborated with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra for an album called "S&M". The band faced challenges in the early 2000s when bassist Jason Newsted left and frontman James Hetfield entered rehab. However, they persevered and released the album "St. Anger" in 2003.

In recent years, Metallica made a triumphant return to thrash metal with their album "Death Magnetic", produced by Rick Rubin. They were also honored with induction into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 2009. Despite some missteps along the way, Metallica remains one of the most influential heavy metal bands of all time.
