Sam Rivers

Samuel Carthorne Rivers was an American jazz musician and composer. Born on September 25, 1923 in El Reno, Oklahoma, USA, he played a variety of instruments including soprano and tenor saxophones, bass clarinet, flute, harmonica and piano. With his diverse musical talents, *Rivers* made significant contributions to the jazz genre.

Throughout his career, *Rivers* collaborated with notable artists such as Andrew Hill, Grachan Moncur III, Archie Shepp, Cecil Taylor, Eric Dolphy and Anthony Braxton among others. His unique style and innovative approach to music earned him a place alongside renowned performers like Ornette Coleman and Roscoe Mitchell.

*Rivers* left a lasting impact on the jazz community with his compositions that pushed boundaries and challenged traditional norms. His work continues to inspire musicians today. Although he passed away on December 26, 2011 in Orlando Florida at the age of 88,* Rivers*'s legacy lives on through his influential contributions to the world of jazz.
