Swedish pop group ABBA, founded in 1972, became famous when they won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974. It started a decade of almost uninterrupted string of hits and major selling albums.
After the group stopped releasing new material in 1982 there was a relative lull in their popularity – which came to an end in 1992 when their compilation album was released. The compilation has become one of the world's most best-selling albums of all time.
In 1999, a musical based on ABBA hits called 'Mamma Mia!' opened in London. With various international productions, it is one of the most popular musicals of all time.
ABBA were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2010, as performers. They recently released a new album in November 2021 and live shows with ABBA appearing as virtual 'abbatars' started in London in May 2022.

This year sees ABBA’s ‘Voulez-Vous’ turn 40. When ABBA’s sixth studio album was released on April 23, 1979, it was an immediate success, shooting to the upper regions of the charts all over the planet. The album had been a long time coming, with sessions starting a year earlier, but it was well worth the wait. Presenting ABBA’s trademark mix of songs with different characteristics and temperatures, the group’s main lead vocalists, Agnetha and Frida, sang their way through the album with passion and energy, expertly interpreting the music and lyrics painstakingly worked out by Björn and Benny. It was, in other words, classic ABBA.
