Albert Ayler was an influential American avant-garde jazz saxophonist, singer, and composer. Born in Cleveland, Ohio on July 13, 1936, he was the older brother of Donald Ayler. Known for his unique style and innovative approach to music, Ayler pushed the boundaries of traditional jazz with his free-form improvisations. Tragically, on November 25, 1970, his body was found floating in the East River in Brooklyn.
Ayler's contributions to the world of jazz are immeasurable. His powerful saxophone playing and soulful singing captivated audiences around the globe. He fearlessly experimented with different sounds and techniques, creating a distinctive sound that defied categorization. Throughout his career, Ayler released numerous albums that showcased his talent as both a performer and composer.

[b]1960[/b] The Impulse! label was started as a jazz subsidiary of [l=Am-Par Record Corp.] under the direction of [a=Creed Taylor] and soon after the label's creation, [a=Bob Thiele].
In the 60s the Canadian versions of the label were manufactured by [l=Sparton Of Canada Ltd.] and wear the [l=Sparton Impulse! Records] label.
[b]1962[/b] The company names changed to [l=ABC-Paramount Records, Inc.] - The [l=Sparton Impulse! Records] remains to mention [l=Am-Par Record Corp.] after the company name changed.
[b]1967[/b] A new change to [l=ABC Records, Inc.] In this period sometimes a second [l=ABC Records] brand appears on the label.
[b]1974[/b] Versions on the concentric label design from the 70s commonly display the [l=ABC Impulse!] label brand.
It operated until 1979, though new recordings had stopped by 1977; it survived on with reissues.
[b]1979[/b] ABC was bought by [l=MCA Records] and Impulse! shut down along with all of the other ABC-affiliated labels.

Impulse is known as [i]The House That Trane Built[/i] because of [a=John Coltrane]'s 1961-67 association with the label.

MCA revived the label mainly as a reissue imprint with a few new releases in the 1980s. It was reactivated as part of MCA-owned [l1071] with new artist signings including [a=Diana Krall] in the 1990s. Following a series of major label buy-outs and mergers, Impulse! is now part of the [l=The Verve Music Group] unit of the larger multi-national [l=Universal Music Group].

In the mid-'60s, Albert Ayler found himself at the center of major transformations within jazz. On his albums for ESP-Disk', his delivery was radically aggressive and his tone blistering – aiming for something beyond the New Thing. His music would be further energized when (at the behest of John Coltrane) Bob Thiele signed him to Impulse! As Ayler told The Plain Dealer at the time, "It's not about notes anymore. It's a sound – a feeling. The approach we're taking will discontinue the use of the word 'jazz.'" In Greenwich Village, Ayler's first LP on Impulse!, perfectly captures the Cleveland-born saxophonist's radiant intensity. Sourced from a pair of live engagements – February '67 at the Village Theatre on New York's Lower East Side and December '66 at the Village Vanguard – these recordings show an improved clarity in production and performance.

Both sets feature two basses (including Alan Silva and Henry Grimes) which allowed the ensemble to go in different harmonic directions while maintaining an organic unity. Of particular interest are "For John Coltrane," a tribute to Ayler's mentor who would pass later that year, and "Truth Is Marching In" where trumpeter Donald Ayler joins his brother to celebrate and ultimately deconstruct several jazz traditions to stunning effect. Vibrant in sound and vision, Albert Ayler's In Greenwich Village is a landmark statement in free jazz and a career high-point for this truly original artist.&nbsp;
