Automatisme is the electronic music project of Quebec-based producer William Jourdain. Since 2011, he has self-released a brilliant series of albums and tracks under this moniker, exploring various intersections of drone, glitch, dub techno, ambient, electro-acoustic and noise. With a background in art history from UQAM (Universté du Québec à Montréal), Jourdain combines his passion for digital visual art with abstract landscape and op art aesthetics.

Starting with site-specific field recordings, Automatisme samples, processes, signal bends and transforms this source material into soundscapes charting a broad spectrum spanning minimalist pulse to methodically additive beat. His compositions also feature stacked-tone maximalism, spatial drone and arrhythmic ambient/noise elements. Influenced by pioneers such as Pan Sonic/Mika Vainio, Stefan Betke (Pole), and Carsten Nicolai (Alva Noto), Jourdain's work pays homage to the early works of these electronic music progenitors.

Jourdain has been busy since 2011 with over 30 releases on labels like Constellation Records (home for Godspeed you! Black Emperor), Force Inc./Mille Plateaux, Neologist Productions, Liberation Through Hearing, Outlines and Dream Disk Lab. He has performed at renowned festivals including Mutek (CA), ELEKTRA (CA), Suoni Per Il Popolo (CA), Pop Montreal

Quebec producer and sound artist Willam Jourdain presents his 2nd Constellation full-length, following the acclaimed 2016 release Momentform Accumulations. Building out his modular synthesis racks and amassing new field recordings, Jourdain has plunged Automatisme deeper into experimentation with Transit, his second full-length for Constellation. Once again the sonic material is all sourced from the field, with recordings captured in the forests and caves of rural Quebec, along with ex-urban “non-places” and various waiting rooms. A simulacrum of what Jourdain calls “the architecture and landscape of supermodernity” is rendered through generative and probability-based digital patches, creating a partially randomized ecosystem for his soundworld to unfold. The through-line on the Transit album is an oscillating tempo that rises and falls like a shifting heart rate or ocean waves or a warped clock –heightening attention to the micro sampled glitch topography and white, pink and brown noise fields of these immersive, pointillist compositions. The pieces are never the same twice: Transit codifies one iteration of these exploratory and temporally unstable works, yielding a superb album of cerebral, enveloping, de-territorialized electronica that occupies a liminal space at the boundaries of ambient, glitch, dub and environmental sound.
