Erato

Erato is a French label that was founded in Paris in 1953. Initially, the label focused on recording French composers and artists, as well as Renaissance and Baroque music. Over the years, Erato has become renowned for its exceptional catalog of classical music recordings.

In 1992, Erato was acquired by Warner Music Group, which further expanded its reach and resources. Then, in 2013, after Warner acquired EMI Classics and Virgin Classics, many releases that were previously issued on those labels were reissued under the Erato name.

Throughout its history, Erato has used various catalog number prefixes to categorize its releases. These include DP for the 'Les Discophiles De Paris' series, EFM for the 'Fiori musicali' series, ELP for 45 rpm(EP) records, LDEV for 45 rpm and 10" records with specific numbers, LDE for monaural records in different sizes (EPs:1***; 10":2***;12":3***), STE for stereo records (12":50001~50312;10":60***) with corresponding monaural versions (STE number = LDE number + 46900), STU for stereo reissues and new issues after about 1968 (70001~70312), and EJA & EJAS for a special luxurious series called 'Jardin des Arts(Garden of Arts

“Erik Satie and John Cage are UFOs in the world of music, because they envisioned music through a completely different prism,” says pianist Bertrand Chamayou. “They are pioneers in the sense that, for many people, they changed the very idea of what music must be.”&nbsp;

With his album Letter(s) to Erik Satie Chamayou pays tribute to two idiosyncratic, innovative and influential composers, one born in Normandy in 1866, the other in Los Angeles in 1912. There is a strong connection between them: Cage considered Satie a source of inspiration.&nbsp;

Satie takes pride of place on the album with such pieces as the three Gymnopédies and the seven Gnossiennes, while Cage is represented by five pieces and a work attributed to him following its rediscovery amongst the papers of his disciple James Tenney – whose musical homage to Satie also features in the programme.&nbsp;

Chamayou recorded the album at the state-of-the-art Miraval Studios in Provence, which inspired him to take an experimental approach: “I thought we should do something a little different – and I thought of Erik Satie. This was an opportunity to get really intimate with the piano … Satie is really a special case, a strange musician unlike anyone else.”
