Touch and Go

Big Black was an American punk rock band from Evanston, Illinois, active from 1981 to 1987. Founded by singer and guitarist Steve Albini, the band's initial lineup also included guitarist Santiago Durango and bassist Jeff Pezzati, both of Naked Raygun. In 1985, Pezzati was replaced by Dave Riley.

Their aggressive and abrasive music was characterized by distinctively clanky guitars and the use of a drum machine rather than a drum kit. The band's lyrics dealt frankly with politically and culturally loaded topics including murder, rape, child sexual abuse, arson, racism, and misogyny. However, these controversial lyrics were meant to serve as a commentary or a display of distaste for the subject matter.

Big Black shunned the mainstream music industry and insisted on complete control over all aspects of their career. They booked their own tours, paid for their own recordings, refused to sign contracts, and eschewed many of the traditional corporate trappings of rock bands. Their staunch criticism of the commercial nature of rock set them apart in the industry.

Touch And Go Records was started in Lansing, Michigan, by Tesco Vee and Dave Stimson in 1981 as an outgrowth of Touch And Go Zine, a fanzine the duo published. Their intent was to document their local hardcore punk scene.

Necros bassist Corey Rusk hooked up with Tesco to help run the label soon after it started and assumed full control after Vee moved to Washington, DC, in 1983. In 1987, Rusk moved the label to Chicago, Illinois, where the label still resides.

Over the years, Touch And Go has issued records by influential bands like *The Jesus Lizard*, *Slint*, *Shellac*, and *Big Black*. However, in 2008, Rusk announced that the label would be cutting back on its activity and ending its distribution services due to the economic climate of the times.

Big Black were punk. These guys (Albini, Dave Riley, Santiago and Roland) were the best. They combined all the new wave, art rock and punk influences that we love and now worship (Gang of 4, Wire, King Crimson, Effigies and Cheap Trick) with their own understanding of middle america. The picture they painted wasn't so pretty. Fists of Love and Stinking Drunk are two of the ugliest portraits painted on this lp. The meanest and definately the rawest is the live version of 'Cables'. This one cuts you open like glass and leaves you longing for an alcohol bath.
