A Heavy Metal band from Kolbotn, Norway, formed in 1987 (initially founded as Black Death in 1986).
Darkthrone started as a death metal group, but having released ‘Soulside Journey’ they decided to abandon the technical death metal style and transformed into a black metal band. The band’s sound has diversified over their career to include elements of traditional heavy metal, thrash, doom, death and speed metal, as well as crust punk. They have not played live since 1991 and since 1993 Darkthrone has been a duo consisting of Fenriz (Gylve Nagell) and Nocturno Culto (Ted Skjellum).

Peaceville is an English label founded by Paul Halmshaw, also known as Hammy, in 1987. The label primarily focuses on metal music and has gained a reputation for its high-quality releases. In 2000, Peaceville was sold to Snapper Music but continues to thrive under their ownership.

Throughout its history, Peaceville has used various catalog number formats to distinguish different types of releases. From 1987 to 1995, the label used "VILE ### T" for 12-inch singles, maxis, and EPs; "VILE ###" for LPs; and "VILE ### P" for picture LPs. From 1987 to 2002, CD releases were labeled as "CDVILE### / VILE ### CD," while MCDs/singles/EPs were labeled as "CDMVILE### / VILE ### TCD." Limited CDs were marked with "CDXVILE###."

In later years, Peaceville introduced new catalog number formats such as "CC#" for the Collectors Club series of 7-inch records in 1993-1994. This edition of A Blaze in the Northern Sky coincides with the 30th anniversary of the seminal album's release and is presented on limited white vinyl, with the sleeve design replicating the original pressing, plus a refresh of the original 1992 audio master.

A Blaze In The Northern Sky, Darkthrone's official second album, was originally released in 1992 and was without question the blueprint for the Black Metal scene, spearheading the evolution of the early second wave movement in Norway and beyond. It was hailed on release as an album of true scene- shifting greatness, following their more death metal focussed debut, Soulside Journey.

The rawness apparent on the album (recorded at Creative Studios, the same location as Mayhem's legendary Deathcrush was put to tape), was unusual for the time and an antithesis to the usual metal production values and standards during the period. With this, Darkthrone's statement of attitude and intent was clear and their status as masters of Norwegian black metal was set.
