Dexter Gordon was a renowned tenor saxophonist during the bebop era. Born on February 27, 1923 in Los Angeles, California, he drew inspiration from influential tenor players of the 1930s and 1940s such as Lester Young, Herschel Evans, and Illinois Jacquet. With his distinctive sound and improvisational skills, Gordon made a significant impact on jazz music.

Throughout his career, Dexter Gordon collaborated with numerous talented musicians including Oliver Nelson, Sonny Rollins, Hank Mobley, Kenny Dorham, Jackie McLean, Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Stitt, Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, Joe Henderson, Clifford Brown and many more.

Gordon's legacy lives on through his timeless recordings and contributions to the jazz genre. His unique style continues to inspire aspiring musicians around the world.

Gearbox is a British independent label founded in 2009 by Darrel Sheinman. Based in London and Tokyo, Gearbox releases new music by contemporary artists as well as previously-unreleased archival recordings. They are well known for their jazz releases, including the "BBC Jazz For Moderns" series taken from jazz programmes on the BBC. The label also has a series called Japanese Editions featuring legendary performances at Ronnie Scott's jazz club in London.

In addition to their record releases, Gearbox operates a mastering studio located at Tileyard Studios in King's Cross, London. Equipped with vintage analog equipment, including a 1967 Haeco Scully lathe with Westrex amplifiers, they offer high-quality lacquer cutting and mastering services. The studio also provides direct-to-disc or tape recording using the adjacent recording studio.

For its own releases, Gearbox Records collaborates with Optimal Media GmbH. Known engineers associated with the label include Darrel Sheinman (Daz), Caspar Sutton-Jones (caspar@gearbox), Cicely Balston (2013-2016), Carla Iannace (since 2021 - carla@gearbox), and Kristina Rhodes (2021-2023). The studio is credited on releases as Gearbox Records Studio or Gearbox Recording.

The great tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon moved to Europe in 1962. Ten years later he was living in Copenhagen when he went on the road with a Dutch rhythm section consisting of pianist Rein de Graaff, double bassist Henk Haverhoek and drummer Eric Ineke. This was quite unusual, as Dexter mostly toured as a solo artist working with local musicians in each town. By the time their performance at the Societiet Progress in Heemskerk was recorded for broadcast by VPRO, the quartet had been playing together regularly for two months. Dexter and his 'Dutch band' had developed a deep rapport and understanding that’s clearly evident on the three extended tracks on this record. These are two of his signature compositions, The Panther and Fried Bananas, plus the iconic Coleman Hawkins classic Body and Soul. With sleeve notes by Dexter’s wife Maxine Gordon that include reminiscences and insights from drummer Eric Ineke and pianist Rein de Graaff, Fried Bananas is an important new addition to the recorded legacy of Dexter Gordon’s fourteen years in Europe.
