Dreyfus Jazz

Dizzy Gillespie was an American jazz trumpet player, bandleader, singer, and composer. He is known as "the sound of surprise" and was a key figure in the development of bebop (bop), which laid the foundation for modern jazz. Gillespie taught and influenced many other musicians, including renowned trumpeters such as Miles Davis and Wynton Marsalis.

In addition to his contributions to bebop, Gillespie was one of the pioneers of Afro-Cuban (or Latin) jazz. He incorporated complex poly-rhythms into his music and added conga drums to his orchestra in 1947. When Afro-Cuban drummer Chano Pozo met jazz trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie in New York City, it was a meeting of two legends with musically explosive results. At the time, bebop was still new and revolutionary, but Chano’s fiery drumming served as a catalyst that furthered its dynamism. It was a short-lived partnership between the two, though, with only a few records produced before Chano Pozo died in a hailstorm of bullets—a drug deal gone bad.
