Donovan is a Scottish singer, songwriter, and guitarist born on May 10, 1946 in Glasgow. He gained recognition for his musical talents and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012 and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2014. Donovan has had a successful career, with hits such as "Mellow Yellow" and "Sunshine Superman".

Aside from his music, Donovan has also been involved in personal relationships that have influenced his life. He was previously in a relationship with American model Enid Karl, with whom he had two children: actor-musician Donovan Leitch in 1967 and actress Ione Skye in 1970. In October 1970, he married Linda Lawrence, with whom he has two children named Astrella Celeste Leitch and Oriole.

In addition to his own family, Donovan is also the stepfather of Julian Brian (Jones) Leitch, who is the son of Linda Lawrence and Brian Jones from The Rolling Stones.

Donovan wrote and recorded much of The Hurdy Gurdy Man in late 1967 not long after recording the songs that would form A Gift From a Flower to a Garden. The rest of the album was recorded in April 1968, after Donovan visited Rishikesh, India to study under maharishi mahesh yogi. Donovan's songwriting for The Hurdy Gurdy Man centered around eerie, trance-like 'drones' on songs as Peregrine, The River Song and Tangier and pop music on most of the other tracks. The songs feature inventive accompaniment, combined with Donovan's usual spot-on delivery. it's amazing what this man can create with such spare accompaniment.
