Malcolm John Rebennack, better known as Dr. John, was an American singer and songwriter born on November 20, 1941 in New Orleans, Louisiana. His music blended blues, pop, jazz, boogie woogie and rock and roll.

From a young age, Dr. John was influenced by the legendary Roy Byrd (aka Professor Longhair) and immersed himself in the vibrant music and voodoo cultures of New Orleans. He gained recognition as Mac Rebennack while playing the organ in strip-clubs with various bands in the French Quarter.

In 1957, Dr. John got his first break as a session guitarist with Ace Records under John Vincent. He worked alongside notable musicians at Cosimo V. Matassa's studio and collaborated with Harold Battiste's 'All For One' co-operative to produce several singles.

In 1962, Dr. John moved to California where he played on Sam Cooke's final recording session before embarking on extensive session work around LA. With Battiste's help, he developed his persona as "Dr. John Creaux, The Night Tripper" while working on Sonny & Cher's sessions for their album "Gris-Gris".

Rhino Records, also known as Rhino, is a renowned music label that was established in 1973 by Richard Foos. Starting as a record store in Westwood California, Rhino quickly gained recognition with its first successful release "Go To Rhino Records" by Wild Man Fischer in 1975. The label's early logo featured "Rocky the Rhino" and focused on novelty, surf, local new wave bands, and reissues of out-of-print records from other labels.

Under the guidance of Bill Inglot for production, Ken Perry for mastering, and A&R team Gary Stewart and James Austin, Rhino expanded its catalog to include a wide range of reissues by the mid-1980s. The label underwent a logo redesign during this time period to simply "Rhino". In 1984, Rhino released its first CD and became known for manufacturing high-quality CDs made by Sanyo (1984-85) and various manufacturers from Japan or Switzerland thereafter.

In 1985, Rhino entered into a distribution deal with Capitol Records which lasted until 1992. This partnership allowed access to Capitol's back catalog and led to the release of reissues of old Capitol albums. Additionally, EMI and Rhino acquired the Roulette family of labels in 1989. As their deal with Capitol came to an end in 1992, Time-Warner offered an opportunity for growth. Half of the label was sold to Time-Warner

Dr. John, the stage name of Malcolm John Rebennack, Jr., was one of the most original, distinctive and influential voices to ever come out of New Orleans. His career spanned six decades as a songwriter, composer, producer and performer. His unique blend of music carried his hometown of New Orleans at its heart. His colourful musical career began in the 1950s when he wrote and played guitar on some of the greatest records to come out of the Crescent City, including recordings by Professor Longhair, Art Neville, Joe Tex, Frankie Ford and Allen Toussaint. Dr. John headed west in the 1960s, where he continued to be in demand as a session musician, playing keyboards on records by Sonny and Cher, Van Morrison, Aretha Franklin and The Rolling Stones' Exile On Main St. During that time he launched his solo career, developing the charismatic persona of Dr. John The Nite Tripper. A legend was born with his breakthrough 1968 album Gris-Gris, which introduced to the world his unique blend of voodoo mysticism, funk, rhythm &amp; blues, psychedelic rock and Creole roots.
