Duke Ellington was an influential American jazz pianist, bandleader, and composer. He is known for his residency at the Cotton Club from 1927 to 1931 and for composing over a thousand pieces, many of which have become standards in the genre. He frequently collaborated with Billy Strayhorn. Duke Ellington's son, Mercer Ellington, took over leadership of his father's orchestra until his own death in 1996. He is also the grandfather of Edward Ellington.

An unreleased recording of a Conny Plank session with jazz-legend Duke Ellington. Duke Ellington's musical works are seemingly well documented; the likelihood of finding a good, unreleased Duke Ellington recording is slight at best. Gronland Record had found exactly that in Conny Plank's estate. Conny Plank had great admiration for Duke Ellington and while he was quite selective with whom he worked with, it was an honour for Conny to have had the chance to do a studio recording with Duke Ellington and his orchestra. The recordings were created in the legendary Rhenus studios in Cologne in 1970.LP - Coloured Vinyl.
