Blue Note

Blue Note is a record label that has made a significant impact in the jazz genre. Founded in 1939 by Alfred Lion and Max Margulis, Blue Note focused on traditional jazz and swing recordings, producing timeless classics. In the 1950s, it became one of the first labels to feature bop musicians. After being acquired by *Universal Music Group* in 1965, Blue Note expanded its repertoire to include more commercially-oriented music like jazz-fusion. Throughout the years, Blue Note underwent various changes in ownership and reissue programs but continued to release new recordings and previously unreleased material.

In 1982, Blue Note catalog reissues began appearing on *United Artists Records*, which was owned by Michael Cuscuna who oversaw the UA-era reissue program. The label was later relaunched as part of *Capitol-EMI's* subsidiary *Manhattan Records* in 1985. It was during this time that Blue Note released key albums from its history and introduced previously unissued material.

In 1989, Blue Note became the division under which all of Capitol-EMI's jazz activities were organized. However, two years later, *Manhattan Records* was revived for smooth jazz and pop-jazz releases while Blue Note continued to thrive as a prominent label within Capitol-EMI's roster.

Jackie McLean was an American jazz saxophonist born on May 17, 1931 in New York City, New York. He passed away on March 31, 2006 in Hartford, Connecticut at the age of 74. With a career spanning several decades, McLean made significant contributions to the world of jazz music.

Known for his unique sound and improvisational skills, McLean was highly regarded among his peers and fans alike. His music showcased a blend of traditional jazz elements with innovative techniques, creating a distinct style that set him apart from other artists.

Influenced by greats such as *Kenny Dorham*, *Freddie Hubbard*, and *Tina Brooks*, McLean collaborated with numerous talented musicians throughout his career. Some notable names include *Joe Henderson*, *Oliver Nelson*, and *Andrew Hill*. These collaborations resulted in groundbreaking albums that further solidified McLean's reputation as a true master of his craft.

The innovative hard bop of Jackie McLean began to evolve and take on a harder edge as the early-1960s progressed. Inspired by Ornette Coleman, the alto saxophonist began to venture gradually into the realm of the avant-garde, but on his own terms, never fully relinquishing a grounding in a soulful sense swing and chordal structures.With his 1963 album Destination… Out! he created a masterpiece of inside-out jazz with a unique quintet featuring Grachan Moncur III on trombone, Bobby Hutcherson on vibraphone, Larry Ridley on bass, and Roy Hayes on drums. This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is all-analog, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, and pressed on 180 gram vinyl at Optimal.
